I am going to let you in on a little secret of mine... I am afraid of book clubs. I don't feel that I know enough, or am smart enough to share my opinions of books that I have read. So I read books and then tell the ladies at work what I thought of them.
Well the two most recent books I have read have been "The Historian" by Elizabeth Kostova, and "The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-time" by Mark Haddon. I loved both books for different reasons, and I highly recommend them to book lovers.
I liked the Historian because I enjoyed the suspense and also the history taken into account in the book. I know that it is a fictional work, and that the author does take some liberties in her writing, but the book does inspire some curiosity into the subject and the countries it mentions. I loved the details of this book as well. It took Kostova ten years to write the book, and I can see why. I raved about it so much that one of my co-workers bought it, and is reading it as we speak!
I am not sure what to say or how to describe The Curious Incident... it was so eccentric and wonderful. I loved that the author was British, and that the setting was England. And I loved the main character Christopher. He is such a strange boy, and yet you completely went into his world, and understood his point of view, as well as those around him. For anyone who has not read this book I would recommend it. Here is what it says on the back cover of the book
"Christopher John Francis Boone knows all the countries of the world and their capitals and every prime number up to 7,057. He relates well to animals but has no understanding of human emotions. He cannot stand to be touched. And he detests the color yellow. This improbable story of Christopher's quest to investigate the suspicious death of a neighborhood dog makes for one of the most captivating, unusual, and widely heralded novels in recent years. "
